Summary
Add a SummaryWhen Amir and Hassan were young boys, Amir witnessed something horrible and did not step in to stop it. This causes him horrible guilt and ruins the friendship he had with Hassan. Years later, he has a chance to redeem himself, by returning to Afghanistan. But her realizes that this country is not the one he remembers from his childhood.
The story of friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul, Afghanistan and the act of cowardice that haunts one of them until he is able to atone for it, years later.
Two boys grow up together in Afghanistan. Amir is the son of a wealthy man, and Hassan is the son of their Hazara servant. Although the boys are initially inseparable, when Amir fails his unswervingly loyal friend, their friendship falls apart. This book follows Amir's life in the aftermath of this failure, during his quest "to be good again".
This is a book about a child growing up in Afghanistan under the Taliban rule.

This is one of the best books i've read in a while.
Beautiful and heartbreaking, this novel brilliantly captures the relationship between Amir and Hassan which is full of complexities. It also reflects the shifting realities of Afghanistan from a poor, generally overlooked nation, to one at war with the USSR, to a nation which is discussed commonly in the supermarket in the United States. Never an easy read with plot turns and descriptions that may be horrific or extremely upsetting for some readers, it ultimately reflects the single Afghan phrase that emerges repeatedly in the novel: life goes on.
Difficult to read, impossible to put down. This story pulls at your heart strings.
Good book.
This is the book that brought me back to reading after years of neglect. Heartwarming with wonderful characters, a great storyline, and a beautiful ending.
One of the most moving books I have, and will ever read. I can't even find words to describe it. WAY better than the movie, too.
This is a great choice for any book club. Every character is identifiable. It is a great book on family, friendship, and culture. It was very emotional and triumphant.
I read and pondered about the emotions circling the characters. It's heart breaking to see them suffer for a long long time. This book is a must read. Be aware that the book is waaaayyy better than the movie.
A beautiful, haunting, and heart breaking novel. The first book I have ever read that made me cry. A real page turner, and a highly praised book that totally lived up to the hype. This is story of betrayal, sorrow, guilt, hope, and redemption. Highly recommended.
