Think Sherlock Holmes mixed with the supernatural and you've got Jackaby, a quirky character who investigates the occult. The story begins with young English woman Abigail Rook arriving in New England and in need of a job. Enter Jackaby,…

This was so fun and exciting! We listened to it on a recent long car ride, and it helped the drive fly by. We had to keep pausing it to discuss our theories and guessed as to who was who and what was what. I loved that it had the feel of a…

Set at the end of the 19th century, this YA mystery novel features the "Sherlock Holmes"-esque detective R.F. Jackaby. While a strong believer in investigation and science, he also has the ability to see the world as it really is - full of…

A delightful read. I liked the main characters, Jackaby and Abagail. The plot moved along nicely and I enjoyed learning about Ritter's idea of the supernatural world that lives alongside us. I appreciated too the Ritter included details…

I really enjoyed this mystery novel. Jackaby is a man with special powers of seeing things normal people can't, and uses it to solve unexplained cases. One thing that I couldn't figure out though: What was in chapter 13 that Jackaby did…

The world building is interesting and good. There’s supernatural elements and creatures throughout the city in hiding. Those with special vision (Jackaby) would be able to spot them whereas Abigail accepts this - a little too accepting but…

This book was introduced to me as "supernatural Sherlock Holmes," and after reading, I can say that was a spot-on description. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and all of their quirks--I loved that Abigail so coveted a "detective…

I won this book in the summer reading program last year. and never read it. Just recently picked it up and couldn't put it back down. It's so good! R. F. Jackaby reminded me of Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts and where to find them. 😊

This book is fantastic! I love how they added the paranormal, fantasy twist to the Victorian-style mystery story. One of my top favorite books.

I like mystery but really enjoyed the twist to this detective where they investigate paranormal crime with ghosts and werewolf creatures. I also liked how the main character has a sense of adventure and wants to be in the spotlight…

It was a great book and I loved it, but it was quite predictable at times. The ending didn't quite make sense, coming from someone who was familiar with the creature that they were referring to.

A fun, quick read. Victorian-style mystery mixed in with a bit of the supernatural. The characters did slip out of time-frame a number of times with modern words (where was the editor?), "okay" being the most frequent. But, I took this as…

Yet another book my colleagues loved that I could not get into. Maybe if there had been a different narrator? I didn't really like the voice she used for Jackaby and I couldn't get into it. I felt like the story was taking a long time to…

Sherlock meets the world of the supernatural. This was a fun mystery. I love how Abigail is seeking adventure and does not want to adhere to the rules of society. Jackaby is smart and quirky.

When Miss Abigail Rook accepts a job with teenage detective R.F. Jackaby, she immediately finds herself on the trail of a murderer. Jackaby is not your average private investigator though. He sees things that others miss. Creatures such as…

This book was awesome. It was a cross between Sherlock Holmes in New England and Dr. Who. It was the perfect blend of murder crime mystery, and creepy, crawly, spooky supernatural. A Supernatural and Sherlock fan mash-up!
