This book will linger long in my mind. Louise Erdrich is one of my new favorite authors.

Story centers on Thomas, a night watchman at a factory that is located on his reservation in North Dakota. He is a leader in his community and he is fighting a US House proposal to eliminate the federal treaties with all native tribes and…

Engaging story based in historic events and people. I really enjoyed how the characters experienced the world; it reminded me of magical realism stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende.

About time Erdrich got the Pulitzer. She was Pulitzer finalist for The Plague of Doves. Then her masterpieces The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse and The Master Butchers Singing Club and The Round House. And more….

Louise Erdrich's 2002 novel "The Night Watchman" explores life among the Chippewa Indians on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in northern North Dakota in the 1950s. The story follows the lives of many people living on the reservation.…

This book reads like a patchwork quilt of characters and stories, each of them beautiful and moving in their own right, but interlacing them all together somehow lessened the impact of each tale, while also making the overall book somewhat…

Motivated by a successful Erdrich read in The Sentence. Pulitzer Prize etc etc... Truthfully, I can't say I completed it. In fact, I couldn't get through the first 30 pages. I found it wordy and self-important.

I listened to the audio book on Libby, read by the author herself. Mesmerizing. Her soft, gentle voice, imbued with humor, transport you right into different world.

I confess that after 50 odd pages there were too many characters for me to keep track of. The tone of the writing is depressing, which did not help. So I stopped there. What I did read was well written, just not compelling enough for me.

Wry and insightful community members unfold a mystery about a missing Native American woman and also honor Patrick Gourneau's historic work to defend Indigenous sovereignty, the author’s grandfather. Calling out society's racism with…

This is a wonderful book richly deserving of the Pulitzer Prize awarded to it last year for best novel of 2020. Author Louise Erdrich, a Native American, was inspired by the life of her grandfather, who led an effort to combat a…

Loved this book even more the second time around. One of her best yet. So pertinent to understanding our shared painful history and it’s continuing effects on our current situation

I loved this book for the descriptions of life on the Turtle Mountain reservation in the 1950s as well as the depiction of Thomas' commitment to his people as he struggles to save the reservation from the US government.

A fascinating anecdote, fact-based, about a smart but innocent young woman, in Minneapolis for the first time, who agrees to put on a mermaid costume and dive into a fishtank as part of a night-club act. Hard-working people in this book;…

Excellent. I learned a lot about Native Americans and what they've been through recently, but also their beliefs about the importance of kindness and charity - and endurance.

This was a wonderful history of what was happening in the 1950s to Native Americans. The characters were vibrant as were the details of their lives and relationships.

The Night Watchman written by Louise Erdrich troubles me. The story is a fictional account of friends and family known to Louise Erdrich. The biggest event is the Indian Termination Act of 1953 which hoped to end the union of the Indian…
