if there were a problem with tom petty, I think it was that he was the biggest talent in his group, the Heartbreakers. he really was better off when he was one of the lesser talents in an overall bigger talented group. I've mentioned the travelling willburys in this context, already. to further make the point, I refer you to YOUTUBE; the video entitled, I CALL YOUR NAME we feature our tom, yet he is in the company of Jeff Lynne, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Jim Keltner and the memory of John Lennon...meanwhile, if yer jonesing for a sight of tom, check out his cameo on jeff lynne's remastered EVERY LITTLE THING, on youtube, at youtube.com....another little thing, about tom's death, and the media's handling of it: 'lapd's squashing' of the rumor(earlier that day) of petty's death. apparently he had lapsed into a coma, and it took some time for family to decide to pull the plug. so you had the (not unprecedented) phenomena of two death announcements being made.
