A little on the boring side but the worst offenses are for whoever designed the costumes and the sets.

I scratched my head on original expensive hot mess version. The director's cut made me say "ah!"
This probably salvaged director's reputation ripped by critics & Trekkies.

Star Trek The Motion Picture is an A+ movie in my book. It delivers what fans wanted back in 1979. I first saw this movie back when I was a teenager when I rented it from mr. movies #46. I was just awed at it much like the first time I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey. People on this forum often compare it to that film with negative thoughts. The film which was brilliantly directed by Robert Wise is structured to be visual experience film, which is why many sequences are longer than what is traditionally done. What he wanted you to do is pay attention to the actions on the screen, then follow the plot. If you notice, the film is more like an episode of the TV series. No weapons or combat are portrayed, which was a goal of Gene Roddenberry. This version is the original theatrical cut of the film, which Robert Wise always felt was a rough cut as they had run out of time in post production fine tune the cut and sound mix to make the December 7th, 1979 release date. If you have the chance find a VHS copy of the "Special Longer Version", this is the 1983 television version, which incorporates 12 more minutes of footage that gives the film more texture. Though this was done without the consent of Robert Wise. It was mainly done to fill in a 3 hour time slot for television. The 2001 "Director's Edition" which allowed Robert Wise to go back and complete the film as he intended is superb, I give that an A++++, though not available on Blu-ray. It was Robert Wise's last project before his death in 2005. It is still worth viewing. My advice to anyone reading this, pop up some popcorn, grab a cold soda, crank up the sound turn down the lights and enjoy the motion picture that started it all. Star Trek The Motion Picture-A Robert Wise Film.

Enough material for an hour long episode stretched into a 2 hour plus movie. Wasn't wild about it when it first came out & it hasn't improved with age.

see both robert wises director cut of star trek the motion picture a much superior version of the film . the boring parts are shortened and footage is also added as well as improved cgi special effects and watch the medeocre cut with some shots that i prefer as opposed to the other cut you decide.

When this movie was first released it seemed the answer to many a Trekkers prayers had been answered. I suppose for some it was. For me, not so much. The movie is OK. The SFX still hold up by today's standards but sorry to say the acting and the storyline were really poor. The story was just too much like the episode "The Changeling" with VGer stepping in for NOMAD. All the actors involved were over the top with this movie especially when all they had to do was stare at a screen during the flight scenes. The upgrade to Blu-Ray is sweet but over all the movie is still as humdrum as it always was.

A long film that can seem painstakingly slow like 2001 Space Odyssey. In many ways, this is what space exploration is like: slow and boring. This film grapples with concepts of life, death & the creator, reinforcing the original Star Trek idea that life can take many forms.

Sound and Very well done old school sci-fi movie. I would recommend this movie for all to see. Well worth the price of admission to any theater

Lives up to the review "Like watching a movie of other people watching TV"

Endless shots of the crew staring wide eyed at 1979 cutting edge special effects, which now look quaint.. for the first five minutes. The plot could have been covered in a typical half hour episode (indeed it was, see THE CHANGELING episode from the original series)

Kirk never punches anyone, never kisses an alien space babe. Bones never really loses his temper.

A complete snooze.
