You'll lose yourself completely in this saga that begins in the momentous era of the U.S. Civil War. Jeffrey Lent has woven a story that reflects the pain and degradation of slavery and the prejudice held against interracial marriages. Choices made echo down through three generations after Norman Pelham, a Union soldier, marries Leah, a former slave from North Carolina. Leah never overcomes the ominous feeling of retribution that lingers after her escape. The decisions she makes to settle her soul continue to disturb her family until her grandson unwittingly stumbles upon the truth and leaves us with some small chance of hope.
