After critics slammed his attempt to emulate Bergman in 1978’s "Interiors", Woody Allen shot back with this fantastical and highly kinetic ersatz Fellini about a filmmaker on the verge of a nervous breakdown, appropriately presented in washed out shades of black and white. A ruthlessly intelligent script is enhanced by some striking visuals—enlarged photographs suddenly appear on the director's walls to lend subtext; a giant gorilla carries off a particularly annoying fan—and the swirling mob of jabbering extras that constantly surround him deliver a nonstop verbal assault of praise and criticism. Although Allen vehemently denied claims that "Stardust Memories" was in any way autobiographical, his disdain for cinema culture in general and critics in particular is evident throughout especially when the paparazzi, puzzled by his director's attempts at “serious filmmaking”, keep harping on his earlier, funnier work—“What do you think the Rolls Royce represented?” asks one confused moviegoer upon exiting the theatre, “I think that represented his car” chimes her equally confused date. Self-indulgent, sarcastic, brilliant, and (irony of ironies) very funny.

I seem to be a member of a small minority in finding Stardust Memories delightful; it is one of my favorite Woody Allen movies of all time, I even preferred it over Manhattan (despite the fabulous street-scape cinematography during the intro). Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy seemed like a relapse to his earlier, more juvenile, era; I was greatly relieved when Allen went on to create masterpieces like Radio Days and Zelig.

Impossible to describe “Woody’s 8 and a half” without using the words “self indulgent”, but hell, the jokes about “I love your work, especially the early funny stuff” really are pretty funny. Full of witty dialog and a lot of great one liners, I’d call this Woody Allen in top form.

Hands down, this is the crowning achievement of Allen's cinematic career. An authentically offensive masterpiece. Superb black and white cinematography, and three exceptional leading lady performances. As a writer for and director of women, Allen has never surpassed the mark he set here.

Terrible. Don't bother.

This had some amusing moments, but it had many different components that did not come together in a cohesive whole for me.
