Surprising and memorable tale of a young, nice soldier on leave for a few days from the front lines. Great script, excellent acting, and interesting scenery in this gripping anti-war film.

'Ballad of a Soldier' is a very powerful and poignant protest against the horror and futility of war. It is a story of a young Russian soldier who is given a short leave to visit his mother as a reward for his heroic fighting with Germans. We follow the young soldier's journey home through a land ravished by war where he meets different people, witnesses how their lives have been uprooted by war and falls in love with a girl whom he meets on a freight train. It is not only a great Russian film but is also one of the brightest gems of the world cinema.

The acting, premise, and execution of Ballad of a Soldier was top-notch. My only problem was that I had a difficult time truly connecting with the protagonist and the plot on a personal level. For whatever reason, I just was not feeling it. However, I understand how people can truly come to love this film.
