Highly entertaining romp with a brilliant performance by Alec Guinness.

I just read the book by Joyce Cary and I have to say this adaptation, which was directed by Ronald Neame and stars Alec Guinness, who also wrote the screenplay, is superior. Guinness will always be Obi-Wan to my generation, but his pre-Star Wars films show a versatility that rivals Olivier (I actually prefer Guinness) and Peter Sellars, who clearly took a few lessons from him. Guinness plays a roguish, impecunious artist whose squalid, lively existence would make the Bohemians blush. It's a bravura performance that wasn't even nominated for an Academy award. The film still feels fresh, robust, and defiant today; a portrait of the artist as a bit of a cad and a scoundrel. Look for Michael Gough (Alfred in the Tim Burton Batman films) as a sculptor. Music adapted from Prokofieff.

This is an excellent film about the life of the artist. Guinness is brilliant as the selfish but creative Gulley Jimson.

SDH & closed-caption review
[o= non-existent; 1 = poor; 2 = fair; 3 = good, 4 = excellent].
The Horses Mouth
The DVD has closed-captioning; no sub-titles are available.
CC quality is poor to fair: Subtitles are lower case (although large) with white letter that are very blurry and very hard- to-read, especially when the film imagery they're superimposed over (without a black background) is a light in-value or white.

Great film however. One of the great movies ever made (that I've ever seen) about a visual artist. I used to think A.G.'s greatest role was in The Bridge over the river Kwai, but he's given himself a tie with The Horse's Mouth.
