A slight and sentimental story of the Paris underworld, with boulevard songs integrated into the action. In spite of Clair's misgivings, his first venture into sound is considered a total success.

Note: this has nothing to do with the Henry Miller book of the same title, which is pretty much pornography. An early French sound film that is part romance, part musical, part gangster movie, and all Gallic charm and wit. This Criterion release also includes a short, silent film of director Rene Clair's and a BBC interview. Also check out Clair's "Le Million," "A Nous la Liberte," and "I Married a Witch."
