Really bad movie. Don't bother.

A youngish Jack Nicholson and youngish Bruce Dern give an acting clinic as disparate brothers in fast-decaying Atlantic City. Director Bob Rafelson, who directed Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces several years earlier, casts him against type as the quieter, skeptical and philosophic brother. Dern's brother is outgoing, a dreamer always chasing pie-in-the-sky deals, who tries to rope his brother into his newest scheme. Ellen Burstyn is also very good in a supporting role. The movie is basically a mood piece, with a sudden, unexpected finish. Its greatest reward is to see Nicholson and Dern, long-time friends, play so beautifully against each other. Nicholson's monologue at the opening of the movie, as a radio storyteller ( like the late, incomparable Jean Shepherd--discover him at JeanShepherdNetcast) is shot entirely in ultra close-up, with Nicholson physically and vocally giving an extraordinary acting tour-de-force.

Jack Nicholson was nearing the height of his great acting career when he made this film. Compare this acting to those movies before Easy Rider and you wouldn’t believe that he would become one of Hollywood’s finest actors. This movie takes place in Atlantic City around 1970 when it was becoming a very seedy city (the city that the game of Monopoly is based on). This movie is just a little scrambled to be listed as a great film like “Five Easy Piece,” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s” Nest and “Chinatown.” It’s seems to be the town of few people who are not playing with a full deck. Just like Atlantic City at this time.
