Todd Haynes contributes a signature oddness to the Jean Genet mythos, which is extensively Americanized here, but no less visceral in the re-telling. Themes of sexualized male humiliation, transgressive sissyboys, the erotic claustrophobia of French prisons...but where Genet's work often glorifies the criminal underworld's cultural sovereignty & transactional logic in defiance of an otherwise unnamed overworld--the editorial 'normal society'--this film attempts to map some of that territory, in the plunge from respectability taken by the scientist who dances too close to the fire, or in interviews with the elderly smalltown ladies remembering the curious boy who killed his father & flew away. I enjoyed the device of three parallel but unrelated narratives occurring simultaneously, & whether or not it was exactly my idea of that author on film, it was an interesting study of his ideas, & a worthwhile addition to his legacy.
