Leos Carax’s extravagant tale of mad love brings together two homeless artists, Alex, an alcoholic, sedative addicted, street performer and Michèle , a depressive, runaway, painter who’s suffering from a medical condition that’s causing her to rapidly lose her eyesight on magnificent set piece of the Pont Neuf, in Paris. Closed for construction, the bridge acts as a temporary refuge for the tormented artists who slowly realize that their developing relationship is giving them solace from their turbulent lives. When Michèle’s family tries to contact her using radio announcements and heavily distributed missing posters to let her know that her condition can be reversed and her eyesight returned, Alex becomes desperate to ensure that their codependence remains intact.

As JuniperAvenue commented, not a film for everyone, i.e. a love story for a pair of young street people, an emotionally traumatized cat lady and an acrobatic drug edict took care of each other one summer while living on the Pont-Neuf that was closed to the public for repair. Some hard to watch raw human conditions for the homeless, often mentally deranged, but could not help to share in the joy on the couple's love and their renewal as the Pont-Neuf itself. You either like it or hate it but none would labeled it boring or ordinary. Critics:
7.5/10 IMDb
3/4 Roger Ebert
84% Rotten Tomatoes

Sorry, I just couldn't get into this one. I fast-forwarded through the second half of the movie. I didn't connect with the characters or the storyline, and stories where people become obsessed with each other creep me out. However, the acting was superb, and Scorsese effectively captures the seedy side of Paris. But there is no way to make Juliette Binoche un-lovely. Even with stringy hair and a suppurating eye, she's a stunner.

A film which you will find exceptionally compelling or, alternatively, think is overdone. I am in the former 'camp'. I think its a brave film, the first hour is extremely arresting.

Only live once. Right? Got one life and wanna live it. You gotta choose, see?
Cops pick you up?
Been in the shelter?
Asshole... Here, go sleep. Some guy's bedded down over there. Can't figure how he got in. Tomorrow, out on his ass!
Ever seen the sea?
-No, but...
The horizon?
-No need...
Come on! The sea! The sea!

Look... a woman who sleeps rough gets beat up, raped, periods don't come, drinks to forget till she's numb! Life outside, it's right for me, for Alex. But impossible for you! You have to go and... LIVE!
So, you weren't always (a bum)?
-No. Steady job... a home... not bad-looking. Ladies called me "Camembert".
Because of the smell?
-No, because I was ripe and ready.
My eyes are going. Listen to me... When I try to paint, this eye here bulges out of my head, like a snail.
Somebody loves you. If you say:
"The sky is white," he'll say:
"But the clouds are black."
Then we'll know we're in love.
We'll drink together, but not your way... like an old wino. I want to be drunk with you, so I can see you laugh.

Don't limp anymore.
Don't limp.
-You see, nothing's... irremediable. Went to the bridge last night... All repaired. Now it's solid.
Why'd you try to forget me?
-Never told you about me... we led such a strange life...
Why'd you never come to see me?
-I waited. I'm afraid of us... at times often... You're weak...
No... Can you love me?
-Yeah, like before, but not the same.
No one... can teach me... to forget.
You know, I'm ready to live in the dark. Because, right now, the world's just a lot of... blurry dancing flames... and I'm sick of it! You'll be there? My white cane? My seeing-eye dog? Playing dog? Already can't see small things. They're the most exciting. A little smile's invisible. Got to make it big... Make it all big for me.

Last line: “Paris can stay in bed.” or was it "Let Paris rot!"
Know the happy man story? Two guys in a bar... really down... wonder if they fxck enough to be happy. So, the first one says, "Me, I get it every two weeks."
The second one says, "Me, once a month." Not a hell of a lot... But there's this third guy at the bar, all alone, huge grin on his face... ear to ear. Guys wonder... why's he so happy? So... not easy... they ask how often he has sex. The guy, beaming, says, "My friends...I make love every three years."
"What? Every three years? So why're you so happy?"
And the third guy says, "Because tonight's the night!"
