Charismatic but dumb John McCabe arrives in a turn-of-the-century Pacific Northwest town to set up a whorehouse/tavern. Shrewd Mrs. Miller, a professional madam, arrives soon after construction begins. She offers to help McCabe run his business and the whorehouse thrives. McCabe and Mrs. Miller draw closer, despite their conflicting intelligences and philosophies. Soon, however, the mining deposits in the town attract the attention of a major corporation, which wants to buy out McCabe along with the rest. His decision has major repercussions for him, Mrs. Miller, and the town.

Images of fire and ice figure prominently in Robert Altman’s sobering “anti-Western” which rips a hole in every American oater ever made. Against a backdrop of freezing rain and snowstorms his two protagonists seem lost in the woods despite their bluster, for Miller’s hard-nosed pragmatism masks a tragic weakness and McCabe’s drunken braggadocio withers when the ugliness of the outside world intrudes upon his tiny isolated domain. With the would-be heroes thus sorely flawed and the villains slathering at the gates Altman’s film culminates in more of a downcast whimper than a bang as God folds his hands and John Wayne is nowhere to be seen. Vilmos Zsigmond’s haunted cinematography turns its British Columbia locations into drizzly soft focus visions of purgatory—including a tepid bacchanal reminiscent of Fellini—and Altman’s brilliant decision to incorporate three Leonard Cohen ballads into the film’s soundtrack gives the whole production a sense of being suspended in time.

This movie is so different from any other Western it is in a class by itself. Acting is unimprovable. It is shot in a haze. As realistic as you're going to get.

a movie for lovers of film. set in the pacific nw territory, it is a movie about the ending of the old west as big business moves in. it is extremely well done....and you will feel as if you experienced the movie's time and place. it also features music of the great leonard cohen.

An extremely atmospheric Western, to say the least. Innovative for its departure from the standard run-of-the-mill cowboy yarns prior. There is no John Wayne/Gary Cooper style hero here on his white horse saving Nell from Snidely Whiplash who tied her to the railroad tracks. Robert Altman introduces us to bare @$$ed prostitutes, an opium den, and an antihero who is a drunk and a coward. It's rumored that the log buildings of the town were crafted by a crew who went to Vancouver to dodge the Vietnam draft.
