English subtitles. Excellent film, a story of hope. Youth in a locked school / institution, run by corpral punishment, fear. A new teacher arrives, with a kind heart and using kindness, respect and music as tools, earns the trust and respect of the boys. Music is such a powerful healing force and it has a positive effect on everyone, especially the Boys.

Minor themes and stories of justice (or lack of), resilliance, institutionalizing and stereotyping children, one person making a difference, remaining true to oneself, making the best of difficult situations, seeing the good in people, finding the light in darkness.

Winner of many international awards, and on several lists of best films of the last decade. A beautiful, elegiac meditation on cruelty and redemption.

Good - Les Choristes (2004) 96 min. French. Nominated for Best Foreign Picture and Song in 2005, The Chorus will not disappoint. The year is 1948; the location is France in a school for boys called Font de L’Etang. The practice at this school was to inflict “action-reaction” as a form of discipline – for every wrong committed, a stiffer punishment is dealt. Monsieur Clement Matthieu, a music teacher, injects his own form of discipline – for every wrong committed, compassion and redirection of the behaviour is encouraged. In this case, Matthieu uses music to calm the boys, who are completely out of control. Well-done. Note - clarification to "Pie's" comments above, the DVD does include full English subtitles.

Such a great movie. Very much enjoyed it despite the full French track. The music is very pleasing and I recommend grabbing the sound track.

Other: If you watch the movie with English subtitles, and your children are not fluent in French taboo language, don't worry - the English translation is quite innocent. The movie is OK for older children, let's say over 10.
