As a reader of WWII history, I was disappointed at first that the Polish underground members, as represented in this film, are communists. Though communists were a part of the resistance, Russia was a partner of the Nazis until September of 1941, or two years after Hitler invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. When I thought more carefully, however, I realized that given the fact that the Russians / Soviets never left Poland after the Nazis were driven out, Andrzej Wajda could not make a film in 1954 unless it passed the clearance of the Politburo. Poland did not gain independence from the Soviet Bloc until 1989. They were an occupied nation for 50 years. I watched the interview with the director after the movie, but I believe I would recommend watching this special feature first. It helps explain the context and history of the film. The director had survived the occupation and had first hand knowledge of the brutality of the Nazis and the ghetto uprising. For a first feature film, "A Generation" is amazing. I don't want to spoil the suspense, but by chance ( and based upon a novel ), one of the leaders of the ghetto uprising, Marek Edelman, was rescued in a manner depicted by the film. Wajda did not know this until many years after the film was made. The young people who made the film had survived WWII and thought they were indestructible, even to the point of using real bullets in the movie guns. This also marks the first appearance of Roman Polanski on film. ***** Again, because I do not believe that it would spoil the film, but would instead enhance the viewing experience, watch the interview first.***** I wish I had. Highly recommend!! Kristi & Abby Tabby
