When the plane carrying Charlie Halliday, a maverick bush pilot and a sick, young, Inuit woman, Kanaalaq, crashes hundreds of miles from civilization, they are at the mercy of nature's worst. While search parties try to find the downed plane Charlie decides to trek over land, promising the woman that he will return with help. Despite her weakened condition, she follows Charlie and nurses him back to health when insects, cold and starvation threaten to kill him shortly after he leaves. Kanaalaq teaches him the skills he will need to survive and he comes to respect her wisdom and love her valiant spirit as they each set out into the wilderness. Each will find a startling and solitary destiny in the beautiful and stark tundra. An adventure story that will move and inspire you as it touches your heart.

An emotional survival story about a young pilot and a sick young Inuit woman who crash-land in the north-Canadian wilds. I found some of the characters' suffering to be more difficult to watch than I had expected, but I liked the relationship that grew between them. My husband and I debated the ending for a bit, but ultimately decided that it was fitting, even though we both felt like we would have liked the story to go on a bit farther.

A wild, crazy fighter plane flyer from WW2, Charlie, now piloting bush planes out of Yellowknife, picks up a sick Inuit girl well north of Yellowknife against his better judgment but crashes his plane in a vast landscape - beautiful but full of hardness and threat. He has been diverted from his flight plan by an incoming storm, so nobody knows where they are. The relationship between the girl, Kanaalay, and Charlie becomes the focus of the movie. And what a relationship it is, pure and wholesome, and full of giving on her part, coping so beautifully with his helpless frustration and thrashing about. Through her gift of loving she teaches him love as well, character, endurance, and acceptance of himself, his limitations and his interdependence with others. The racism of white society at the time is shown brutally, and is repudiated so wonderfully by the fine character of Kanaalay. Very moving, understated and powerful film.

Barry Pepper and supporting actress Annabella Piugattuk work great together! Spectacular vast miles of terrain landscape way out in the middle of unforseen civilization after being stranded from a plane wreck!
Film shot in Merritt, British Columbia and ChurchHill, Manitoba.

A gripping adventure tale of the interaction of subsistence and industrial societies. The reality of the setting and the outstanding quality of the cinematography is remarkable.

This remarkable film is the best of the three movies-into-books by Farley Mowat that I've seen. If you like it, I suggest also viewing "Never Cry Wolf",.. based on (but not the same as) the book by the same Canadian author.
