A young woman named Sophie is cursed by the Witch of the Waste and is turned into an old woman who is unable to tell anyone of her plight. Unable to continue her job at her mother's hat shop, she goes to the ambulatory castle of the notorious wizard Howl and insinuates herself into his household. Sophie befriends Calcifer, the fire demon who powers the castle and who is bound to Howl by a contract, the terms of which Calcifer cannot reveal. They promise to help each other with their problems. Like Calcifer, Howl can also see through the Witch's spell, and he and Sophie fall in love. Sophie helps Howl confront his former teacher, and the Witch of the Waste.

The movie “Howl's Moving Castle is a marvellous movie with great detail. The animation of this movie was outstanding just like Hayao Miyazaki’s other anime movies. Although the animation of this movie is very similar to “Spirited Away”, however the animation of some characters and backgrounds was very well done. The characters of this movie are very lovable, this movie has an odd choice of characters such as a small fire. The theme of “Howl's Moving Castle” is more towards fantasy with witches and wizards as well as some romance. The movie is one of the best anime movies of all time, although the beginning of “Howl's Moving Castle” is quite slow and a bit boring. The emotion and mood which this movie emits is breathtaking and seems so life-like during the moment with Romance, suspense, sadness and joy. “Howl's Moving Castle” has a well-produced plot with a powerful yet beautiful wizard falling in love with a girl who is cursed by an evil witch. This movie is a ”must watch” for those who adore fantasy/romantic themed movies. Rating: 4.5/5

Enchanting! The wheezy dog was my favorite character :-)

I love Sophie to pieces, but this isn't one of Miyazaki's best. The pacing is wonky and the narrative doesn't flow as smoothly as it should. I appreciate what he's trying to go for in the film, but it doesn't work in a lot of ways for me.

When the DVD came out, I listened to the Japanese cast dialogue version being familiar with a couple of the voice actors from other works. It definitely is worthwhile watching the movie in two different languages as each cast gives different nuances to the movie.
As other comments have indicated, the Studio Ghibli movies, though animated, are not all suited for young children due to some subject matters and content. While Disney is the distributor of these films in North America, the movies are not Disney style movies (the big eyes being the only similarity between Japanese and North American style animations).
It also depends if young adults/children have had prior exposure to Studio Ghibli films-there are more serene titles but many titles are best for the 14yr old and up crowd (as comprehension of some themes is better understood). Never show Princess Mononoke to young kids. The first few minutes of the film are too intense for children.

Our whole family enjoyed this movie. Although it had dark moments, it was generally light-hearted and easy to understand the story line. The music style and anime style was very similar to "Spirited Away" which we also enjoyed. This one is easier on a younger audience.

Gorgeous animation combined with a wonderful voice cast make this an enjoyable film for all ages. The monsters are a bit scary so I probably wouldn't show this to children under 6 but it's an excellent gateway film to anime.

I read the book before the movie, and honestly both are good in their own way. The book had me engrossed, so that I finished it fairly quickly. The film was also really good - a beautiful love story (I teared up in one scene and then cried in another, both with Sophie and Howl). I kind of felt the anti-war message was a bit overdone, but overall it was a great film. Third favourite Studio Ghibli (after Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind).

Like others have said this is from Studio Ghibli and one of Hayao Miyazaki's great epic stories. I think anyone who see's one will fall in love with the animation as well as in-depth stories. Please do note when looking up movies to watch from Ghibli that these are not all suitable for kids or young adults. It is an interesting new perspective also as these 'japanimation' style movies are from a perspective we rarely see as many of the movies take place during wartimes and so from their perspective show how horrible the americans were in war times...some were even too had for me to watch right through however every one was a masterpiece in and of itself.

Young Sophie: [Approaches The Witch Of The Waste while she tries to hide Howl's heart from her] Howl needs that back now
Witch of the Waste: Don't at me, I don't have it, I don't know what you're talking about
Young Sophie: [hugs her] Please give it back
Witch of the Waste: You really want it that badly?
Young Sophie: [on the verge of crying] Yes
Witch of the Waste: Alright then, you'd better take good care of it
Young Sophie: Okay
Witch of the Waste: [hands her Howl's heart] Here dear
Young Sophie: Thank you you have a big heart!
[kisses her]

[Howl comes running out of the bathroom, screaming. His hair is now orange]
Howl: Sophie! You, you sabotaged me! Look! Look at what you've done to my hair! Look!
Old Sophie: What a pretty color.
Howl: It's hideous! You completely ruined my magic potions in the bathroom!
Old Sophie: I just organized things, Howl. Nothing's ruined.
Howl: Wrong! Wrong! I specifically ordered you not to get carried away!
[tragically]
Howl: Now I'm repulsive.
[slumps into a chair]
Howl: I can't live like this.
[starts sobbing, head in hands]
Old Sophie: Come on, it's not that bad.
[Howl's hair changes color to purple, then black]
Old Sophie: You should look at it now, its shade is even better.
Howl: [inconsolable] I give up. I see not point in living if I can't be beautiful.
