Though this book was beautifully written, atmospheric, and captivating, it was an uncomfortable book to read and I was quite relieved when it finally ended. The perverse obsession the boys have with the Lisbon girls was somehow more disturbing than the suicides. Had no trouble with this narrator/reader.

Amazing storytelling.

Eugenides has some serious writing chops, no question about it. Telling the story of the five doomed Lisbon sisters through the collective recollections of and retrospective interviews by a group of neighborhood boys was an intriguing technique to give readers a viewpoint that, while interesting, can never capture the sisters' motivations. So, in the end, we're still left with the fundamental question about why five teenage girls from the same family would choose to take their own lives. I couldn't imagine a group of boys being obsessed enough with the girls to continue their quest for information long after their bellies had gone soft, so the premise was hard to swallow. But, as mentioned, I do like Eugenides' writing and, for that, I give the book three stars.

The narration was well-done, it's the story itself that is just weird and creepy - and not in the good way!

The book group I am in read this book or I would not have finished it. The whole time I was reading it I was wondering where child protective services were.

I would never read this again. However others in my book group really liked it so I am sure it appeals to some just not me.
