Brilliant writing with an consonant, immersive dialog, but I'm guessing that unless you're already a fan of other authors like William Faulkner or Thomas Wolfe, i.e. writers with a heavily measured prose, a story such as Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses is going to feel slow and meandering.

I must confess that I didn't much like the story itself, but that is more than made up for by the extraordinary narration by Muller: each character is given their own voice and the narrated portions are given emphasis just where it should. The whole is far better than merely reading the book.

So many reviewers refer to this as a coming of age book - I've not thought of it that way, maybe I don't understand the reference. Cole is operating on his understanding of life so far; maybe lost in a time warp & not in the current challenges with how the world is changing. The values & familiar actions are imbedded in his nature. What else can he do? I like this character, his straight forward replies & economy of speech. I've enjoyed the book, the audio & movie.
