the young and attractive costar was Melanie Griffith.
"'Night Moves' was Penn's point of turning, his last carefully structured work, a strong and bitter film, whose bitterness emerges from a loneliness that exists as a given, rather than loneliness fought against, a fight that marks most of Penn's best work. 'Night Moves' is a film of impotence and despair, and it marks the end of a cycle."-Robert Kolker, "The Cinema of Loneliness"
1975's "Night Moves" reunites "Bonnie and Clyde" director Arthur Penn and actor Gene Hackman. Like many 1970s new American cinema films, it takes a familiar genre (detective film) and makes it darker and bleaker. Hackman's p.i. is like a wearier, meaner cousin to Elliott Gould's Philip Marlowe from "The Long Goodbye." A teenage Melanie Griffith made her debut in this and it's also an early film for James Woods. It has a classic 1970s bummer ending.
A costume party where everyone dresses up in 1970s attire and pretends to be in a murder mystery. If you're one of those people who only remember Jennifer Warren as a supporting role in the long drama of Leonard Cohen's life you'll be pleased an edified to see her here when she was still young and shockingly attractive making love to Gene Hackman.
INTERESTING STORY FOR 2005 MOVIE. LOTS OF TWISTS AND TURNS TO FIGURE OUT WHO DONE IT WITH THIS TANGLED WEB. AIRPLANE STUNTS GREAT.
COULD GRIFFITH'S RISE TO STARDOM COME AFTER HER NUDE SCENES AS A TEENAGER?
1975 thriller: a LA detective retrieved the runaway teen daughter from Florida back to her over-the-hill ex-actress mother, only to learn that the teen was soon killed in a movie shoot during an auto stunt. Lots of twists and more bodies related to the teen turned up ... he finally solved the crimes at the very end. Featured a barely legal Melanie Griffith as the troubled teen.
