Master quilter Sylvia Compson discovers a stash of letters in the attic of Elm Creek Manor and traces a tale back to 1859. An escaped slave, Joanna, spent a brief period at Elm Creek Farm until she was captured and returned to bondage, leaving her son in the care of the Bergstrom family. If Sylvia is to determine the fate of Joanna and her son, she must rely on one important clue: the meticulous heirloom quilt Joanna stitched and left behind.

“The Lost Quilter” immerses you in the daily trials and fears of slaves. The master rejects his slave’s choice of a name for her newborn, making his own selection. The separation of husbands, wives and children also occurs at the master’s whim. The slaveowners’ perceptions of the concerns of their slaves are quite different from reality.
The series continues the story of Joanna, the runaway slave aided by the Elm Creek families in “The Union Quilters.” I was glad to have read the Union Quilters first (#17 in the series) and to have already learned about Joanna’s time as a runaway. The Lost Quilter (#14) gives the details of her life before and after recapture
The story begins and ends with the descendants of those who aided Joanna searching for details of the woman. It helped that I already knew who the woman was whose saved letters they were reading.
