The narration by Degas is outstanding! He sounds like the author for the main part of the work and is able to adopt accents, and, it seems, even to change the timbre of his voice for the numerous long quotations from documents. The work itself is one I found frustrating: Schama just romps across time and space, giving vivid imagery and morally incisive narratives and a lot of judgements, but with little to no regard for historical coherence. Its a stylistic choice on his part, but for my part, although it was touching and intense, wasn't to my taste.
