In the past decade, we've come to accept certain ideas about the differences between males and females--that boys can't focus in a classroom, for instance, and that girls are obsessed with relationships. In Pink Brain, Blue Brain, neuroscientist Lise Eliot turns that thinking on its head. But this, says Eliot, is just what they need to do, and she offers parents and teachers concrete ways to help. Boys are not, in fact, "better at math" but at certain kinds of spatial reasoning. Girls are not naturally more empathetic; they're allowed to express their feelings. I read this book long before I even thought about having children. Now that I have two sons, what I read seems even more relevant than ever. They key thesis that there is much more natural variation within either sex than between the two is very true, but the book does not shy away from the fact that there are some biological differences too (or from some of our societal practices that increase those differences). The sections about how boys are more likely to start school "a year late" and how much difference a few months can make in the early years (as evidenced by the large number of professional hockey players born in the first few months of the year) were particularly interesting.
