Explores the space between Christianity and paganism. The year is 1595 - a long and brutal war is finally over. Brothers Knut and Erik, part of a commission marking the border between Finland and Russia, commit a terrible sin as they leave a young girl to die a horrible death. As the commission crosses the uncharted swamp, the girl returns to haunt them. Weary men find solace from the nameless village and find a sauna, the sauna where all sins are washed away.

A high-quality meditation on war crimes & the expiation of sin, with pacing & a rich character focus that reminded me a lot of live theater, actually. The horror element has an almost incidental feeling for much of the film, & isn't ever in the driver's seat, but happily I didn't mind at all. The photography is flawless, showcasing the rugged forests & greyish light of Finland. The historical facet is interesting & non-intrusive, & the allegorical facet is balanced, believable, & intelligently designed. Great film. CR

A dark historically based horror film. It plays more with your mind than with imagery. There are disturbing scenes so I would definitely NOT recommend under 18 watch - not sexual.
