French farm girl Camille is awaiting news of her husband, who is fighting at the front. After she receives an enigmatic letter ending their relationship, she dresses up as a boy and joins a wandering regiment in search of her estranged love. Skirting the edges of battlefields, the platoon haunts the screen like shell-shocked specters, awakening for four uncannily beautiful musical numbers played on homemade string instruments.

During WWII a young woman disguises herself as a man in order to journey into the heart of battle to search for her missing husband. Her quest begins to take on supernatural overtones as she meets up with a small cadre of army deserters heading in the opposite direction. Using mythical allusions (the story of “Orpheus and Eurydice” comes to mind) and flights of fancy......without warning the soldiers pull out musical instruments for sudden improvised song routines.......this film weaves a rich tapestry that culminates in a beautifully enigmatic conclusion.

Poor movie, shallow, long and extremely pretentious. Camille doing okay but the others completely incredible. Dialogues completely not fitting with the times, vocabulary far too grand for those deserters. And Depardieu JR's performance, thank God extremely short, absolutely mediocre. And all the actors are quite plump and so clean, not realistic in the least. A waste of time. Under pretense of a historical story, tries to sell anti-war propaganda, and it does not work.

From reviews of this film, I learned that I need to know more about "Orpheus," "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "Camille" to determine more fully what the film was trying to say. The only thing I got was that this was an anti-war film, but it was more surreal, dreamy, and unreal than most other anti-war films.
