In my opinion, this is NOT a good learning device for French because the questions are too ambiguous. For example, MANGO asks for the translation of "boeuf bourguignon." No context is given. The reply " le boeuf bourguignon" is counted as being incorrect. The answer given is with the partitive "du boeuf bourguignon." But if the expression is after, for example, Aimez-vous" then the correct answer would be with the definite article. Here's another example from another lesson. One is asked to translate "We have." However the answer "Nous avons" is counted as being incorrect. The given correct answer is "Nous prenons." "Nous prenons" does mean "We're having" but only in the context of getting food i.e. We're having [or getting] some hamburgers. Because no context for the question is given, one can only guess what MANGO is looking for. I think this ambiguity which is evidenced throughout the program creates confusion where there should be enlightenment. In addition, the graphic sound comparisons are frustrating. If the student's voice has a different pitch from the model sound byte then the discrepancies between the two are marked even though the student would be understood by a native speaker. In sum, MANGO mangled what might have been a good learning opportunity.
