Can a boy of nine be a big brother, a father, a mother and a luminary all at once? For young Ayse, the answer is yes. In fact, as far as she's concerned, her big brother, Ahmet, is afraid of nothing at all. But the truth is, Ahmet is a child too, and he too has his fears. Equally, it's impossible for him to know everything. Their father, Kazim, has gone off to marry another woman and abandoned the two children to their fate with Hasan, their elderly and half-crippled grandfather.

The following comment is quite understandable. However, if 'Mommo, the Bogeyman' makes us just yell at its ending, another film about children 'Grave of the Fireflies' is very likely to make us burst in tears. Heart-breaking as these films are, they do represent the unpleasant truths of the times that we live in.

The back of the cover of this dvd describes this film as "heartwarming". Do not be deceived. It is a very disturbing film that kept me awake in the night revisiting it. It is a story filled with false hope and sadness. The end made me yell out loud with indignation at its injustice and lack of resolution. Be prepared. And don't let your kids watch it.

'Mommo, the Bogeyman' is an award-winning film at the International Children's Film Festival about two siblings who have been abandoned by their father and have only each other to count on. The brother acts as a guardian, friend and guide for his young sister, who is terrified that a bogeyman will take her away. As the brother bravely protects her from all troubles, little does he know that sometimes the bogeymen are for real. It is a beautiful story of love and loyalty of a brother and a sister for each other and is all the more poignant as it is a true story.

Great performances by both children but a heart breaking true story. You will need a couple of tissues for this one.

This is an excellent film from contemporary Turkish cinema. Top-notch performance by two very young actors, a heart-wrenching story between a brother and a sister, and beautiful shots of the Turkish countryside. My favourite kind of cinema. No happy ending, though. So be warned. Subtitles.

Great film for those who enjoy immersion in foreign cultures but aren't able to travel. A very poignant true life portrayal of human strengths and weaknesses minus the excessive Hollywood tinsel. The film is remarkable in that it speaks simultaneously to the male and female heart.
