Elton is on two cuts: SURPRISE SURPRISE SWEET BIRD OF PARADOX; and, WHATEVER GETS YOU THROUGH THE NIGHT. Contains the classic line: ' I'll scratch your back and you knife mine.'. . . : Howl, wolves, howl!// in this era, actually after john returned to nyc from L.A., and from chasing after phil spector, who had absconded with the master tapes from the ROCK AND ROLL session, john was looking out over the night sky above Central Park, and-- so he said-- saw a UFO.' lately, it occurred to me that he might have seen an early drone, an unmanned one ( i saw one, a manned one, in Frisco about 15 years ago).

stand outs on this outing follow: surprise, surprise sweet bird of paradox; steel and glass; scared;beef jerky; what you got; #9dream; bless you. the stones had a massive hit later in the decade, called miss you. miss you is scared speeded up and bounced, with a disco beat. john was separated from yoko, so bless you is his love letter to her, from across the continent. he had rented the house next to steve McQueen's, on the beach near Malibu. Keith Moon roomed with john and was engaged in a feud with the actor. Ringo and Harry Nilsson were regular visitors. A whole lotta partying was goin' on. Paul and Linda and Bowie came over at least once. Stevie Wonder. Imagine all that. In the California sunshine. 1974.

The debate about the individual importance of each Beatle is endless, but it's clear from all of their solo work that they were greater than their parts. Conventional wisdom is the Paul stuck with melodic silly little love songs and John played up his introspective, sometimes tortured genius. Ringo proved his inconsequentiality and George perhaps benefited most from going solo, releasing "All Things Must Pass," which is a contender for best post-Beatles album. 1974's "Walls and Bridges" suffers from overproduction, smothered vocals and a rather indifferent approach, which plagued a lot of Lennon's solo work. "Whatever Gets You Thur the Night" is the only well-known song on here and there are no real deep cuts. Elton John and Harry Nilsson contributed background vocals. This reissue includes 2 bonus tracks.
