One Nation Under Sex

How the Private Lives of Presidents, First Ladies and Their Lovers Changed the Course of American History

Ben Franklin saved the American Revolution by seducing French Women. A gay love affair between President James Buchanan and Senator William King aided the secession movement. Woodrow Wilson's girlfriend dictated his letters to the German Kaiser. And lesbian relationships inspired Eleanor Roosevelt to become a revolutionary crusader for equal rights. The colorful sex lives of America's most powerful leaders have influenced social movements, government policies, elections and even wars, yet they are so whitewashed by historians that people think Thomas Jefferson and Abe Lincoln were made of marble, not flesh and blood.

But the truth is about to come out. In One Nation Under Sex , free speech activist and notorious Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt teams up with Columbia University history professor David Eisenbach to peek behind the White House bedroom curtains and document how hidden passions have shaped public life. They unpack salacious rumors and outright scandals, showing how private affairs have driven pivotal decisions--often with horrific consequences. Along the way, they explore the origins of America's fascination with sex scandals and explain how we can put aside out political moralism and begin focusing on the real problems that threaten our nation.

Oh, I was floored at what I knew about American sex scandals.
Celebrity Benjamin Franklin had affairs in France? Staid him?
Madison dated a 15 year old named Kitty?
15th & 16th president were closet homosexuals? WTF?
However, I was reassured that it wasn't what you are, but what you do & associate with.
Buchanan had 32 year relation with King (his political mentor) who happened to be a slave owing southerner. It explained why he pandered to pro-slavery cause & left a strategic mess to Lincoln.
Harding deflowered a virgin, got caught by embarrassed vice squad & had an illegitimate child?
First tell all presidential scandal book published in 1927?
Wilson's second wife for better or for worse prevented vice-president to take over ailing Wilson & persuaded Democrat senators not to compromise on League of Nation treaty. I thought Republican torpedoed it from history class.
F.D.R & Eleanor Roosevelt's marriage a complicated tale.
Mrs. Kennedy created the Camelot myth. It hurt that she had revenge sex & affairs.
Book was surprisingly objective & fair despite author admitting $1 million reward on juicy information on hypocritical "family values" Republicans during Clinton's impeachment.
If nothing else, book provided fodder for alternative history writers on new uncovered historical divergences.

When I first saw Larry Flynt’s name on this book, I was a little apprehensive. Right or wrong, I tend to associate him with muck-raking of the lowest degree. But I was pleasantly surprised. He provides all the gory, drool-inducing tidbits in a straight-forward, “just the facts” manner. I particularly liked his conclusion—that the sooner America calms down and realizes that their leaders are adults of legal age and have healthy sex drives, the sooner we can focus on the really important stuff.
