A perfect rendition of life in small-town Ohio in the mid-'50s, showcasing a large family with a doughty matriarch who finds a new life with an old friend.

What's with the title? Dew writes: "being polite to Hitler was the way the world worked. It was... what held society together, how people got through every single day.... Everyone he knew... held fast to propriety in the face of chaos, desperate etiquette in the face of despair and terror." What goes on underwater often does not show on the surface.
