The tranquility of St Mary Mead has been shattered when the local magistrate, Colonel Lucious Protheroe, is found with a bullet through the head. He was a thoroughly despicable character and it seems that nearly everyone in town had a reason to want the Colonel dead.

Nobody heard the shot, and there are no clues. Inspector Slack is at a total loss. That's when local busybody Miss Jane Marple decides to help. It's a race against the clock as Miss Marple sets out on the twisted trail of the mysterious killer with no help at all from the local police.

I think this is the first Miss Marple mystery. I wish she was not so often described as helpless or old when she obviously is smarter than many of the other residents. I read this many years ago and didn't remember the ending so I enjoyed reading it again... a classic example of Christie's plot and psychological twisting.

This is the first Christie novel to feature Miss Marple, a lovely old women who has insight into the character of those around her and uses it to solve murders. The novel was written in 1930.

Typical to Agatha Christie, there isn't a lot of action, and the first mention of the murder is half-way through the book. Good for a long read.

I think this was a fantastic book. Some of the English is old fashioned, which make some parts hard to understand.Other than that this book was a terrific, thrilling mystery.
