The Singleton family's fortunes seem unaffected by the Great Depression, and at Atlanta's elite Washington Seminary Perri lives a carefree life. But when tragedies strike, Perri is confronted with a world she has never known. Mary Dobbs Dillard, daughter of an itinerant preacher with radical ideas, is sent from inner-city Chicago to live with her aunt and attend Washington Seminary. She arrives at the point of Perri's crisis, and tragedy forges an unlikely friendship.

This is Musser's best work since "The Swan House", the beautiful writing mirrors her earlier work. Characters are well developed and authentic. I am not usually a fan of books written in two different voices, but it works well in this story.

"I should not have kept that photo of Jackie in my Bible. It rubbed salt in the wound, again, and again. Jackie Brown was the fault line in my theolog."
