This is a 1967 pshycological drama directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara (蔵原惟繕), based on a 1950 novel (愛の渇き) of the same name by Yukio Mishima (三島由紀夫), who committed suicide in 1970 by harakiri(腹切) or seppuku (切腹)----the death by the Japanese warrior tradition.
He was obsessed by the anachronistic yet traditionally honored death method.
Anyway, his obsession is seen in the film in the sense that Etsuko (Mishima himself) is obsessed by the young gardener.
Mishima was a well-known homosexual.
Superb is the performance of Ruriko Asaoka (浅丘ルリ子) as Etsuko (悦子).
