a wealthy soulless man, his desperate lover, a naive young woman from Paris, a drunken artist boyfriend and a good-looking construction foreman circle each other through a mountaintop hotel and a dam construction site until the right pair becomes a match. an eccentric hotel guest and dim hotel clerk add a dash of humour. banned by Vichy authorities during the Nazi occupation of France for coming too close to an allegory of the times.

Very interesting film made during the French Occupation of WWI. Beautiful to look at, it begins very quietly and builds to an outlandish, improbable climax. Attractive stars!
