Ric Burns returns to the Civil War with this documentary. He was heavily involved in the production of his brother Ken's landmark film back in the 90s, and in this case, he focuses his interest on the psychology of death in the war. The sheer horrendous casualties, the uncertainty in families as to whether or not their loved ones were dead, and the tremendous impact of death on such a scale in terms of how it shaped the country from that point on are explored in depth. The subject matter is treated with appropriate gravitas, and the documentary itself is a worthy companion to the original film documentary.
