Writer Qiu keeps getting better, creating a complex police procedural, complicated by overt and hidden influences from Shanghai & Beijing government hierarchy or Party politics, yet limning lines of Chinese poetry as clues or nuances. Fans of Orwell's Animal Farm will be fascinated at how some pigs become more unequal.

Xiaolong qiu is going to have to find a new formula as once again it is a woman who is the killer. Too banal a plot to even finish the book.
