This is basically the first season of the TV series Babylon 5 and it is quite enjoyable. I do believe that this show has the same writer throughout the 5 series so there is a definite consistency in quality. And the writing was good enough to win a couple of Hugo Awards (a very well know award for science fiction writing) along the way. Even the producers of the show were pretty surprised when some of the episodes were nominated for these awards because TV shows are rarely noticed. As to other qualities, the special effects are good considering the time and that this is a TV series. And it still holds up pretty well today. The acting is … well … less just say it is pretty descent. Some of the actors aren’t the greatest but some of the main character actors are quite good. But then again this is a TV show so it was pretty much up to and usually above the standards of those years. The plots and scripts are intelligently put together with lots of military and political intrigues and battles and, of course, the occasional love story. The humor is quite good at times also. Basically I would recommend this series for anyone of any age who likes sci-fi. It might be too politically sophisticated and/or philosophical at times for little kids though. There is little blood and almost no bad language. But there is a lot of action with people and aliens dieing. One thing though. You do have to understand that this pilot series starts off a major plot progression that does not culminate until the 4th season. Unfortunately the library doesn’t have the 4th season so I had to buy it. I will be donating it though so maybe it will be available for others later. I hope the library people decide to keep it because it is a very good and exciting season.
