You know something is up when the government leaves three orphaned teens (Zander, 14; narrator Kit, 13; and sister M.K., 10) to their own devices. The siblings think they've simply been lucky, despite having to struggle for food and security, but there's more to the story than that. Their father was a famous explorer for the government, but was discredited shortly before his strange and unexplained death. Now they find themselves suddenly caught up in world of secrets, not sure who to trust, investigated by the government, and attempting to track down the mysterious, vague clues their father left for them. It means fleeing their comfortable home and heading off into the wilderness for adventures of their own.
There was a lot to like in this book, not the least of which--aside from the empowered, self-reliant young protagonists--is the strange and complex world that Taylor has created and gradually reveals to us. Not only do readers not know everything about that world, neither do the characters themselves. It is a world of secrets and conspiracies that leaves much to be discovered. I thought some of the plotting and descriptions could have been stronger, but it's definitely an intriguing, complicated adventure.
And it has an excellent opening sentence: "Amerigo Vespucci and I had gone out to try to find some flour when the Explorer with the clockwork hand caught up to me in an alley behind the market stalls."

Computers have failed, electricity is extinct, and the race to discover new lands is underway! In this nail-bitingly thrilling adventure novel, brilliant explorer Alexander West has just died under mysterious circumstances, but not before smuggling half of a strange map to his intrepid children — Kit, the brain, M. K., the tinkerer, and Zander, the brave. Why are so many government agents trying to steal the half-map? What powerful secrets does it hold? And where is the other half? It's up to Alexander's children — the Expeditioners — to get to the bottom of these questions, and fast.
