This book is a memoir written by the late Stephen Hawking. Unlike some of his other books, such as, The Brief History of Time, the world renowned scientist discusses the various periods of his life, including his birth, early childhood, schooling, marriage, and fatherhood, to name a few. However, as the title suggests, these periods are only briefly discussed. In fact, as the book progresses, they are easily overshadowed by his focus on his theories, discoveries, and experiences while working as a theoretical physicist and a cosmonaut. Much of the book explains scientific concepts and theories that are an integral part of his field of work. The details on his life as a child, husband, and father are only touched on a superficial level. Thus, those who are more interested about his life and personality rather than his work may be slightly dissatisfied. All in all, the book moves along at a decent pace and sheds light on one of the greatest scientists of recent times, which leads me to give it a rating of 3.5 stars.

A recommended read for anyone interested in the triumphs and challenges in the life of theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking. A wonderful book!

I must confess when I picked up this book I thought it would be an account of Hawking's battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease.) However, it was almost halfway through the book that Hawking's first mentions his illness when he says, "When you are faced with the possibility of an early death,it makes you realize that life is worth living and there are lots of things you want to do." Indeed Hawking has lived a full life that anyone would be proud of. I did not understand all the Mathematics and Physics in his description of his research into cosmology but I'm looking forward to rereading the book so that perhaps I may understand it better. That is something I would recommend. Get your own copy so that you may keep reading it. It is definitely worthwhile.

Excellent, give us an overview of his life and achievements. This short book let you have a peek inside his mind, and therefore see how deep and important his theories are.

This is a short, easy to understand book about one of the greatest minds in our universe. In this book Mr. Hawking tells us of his life story from his early childhood to present day. He does speak at some length about black holes, the big bang, time travel, etc.

I would recommend the book for ages 12 and up.
