David Lowery (director, not Camper Van Beethoven front man) sez that two of his influences are Claire Denis and Paul Thomas Anderson. He must be mighty deluded as it appears that his main influences are Ed Wood and Phil Tucker:

1. Sub-moronic plot line all to do with the wounding of a lunk-headed cop.
2. Lighting of scenes almost non-existent. The last 15 minutes are so murky, it is almost impossible to see what's going on. The producers must have saved a bundle on lighting costs for this one.
3. Super-wooden acting. Could this be the same Rooney Mara that co-starred in "Carol"? I predict that Casey Affleck will soon star as a cigar store Indian.
4. Wrong Carradine brother in this one. It should have been brother David re-enacting his role in "Death Race 2000"

Since this is Lowery's first movie of any consequence, he can't be counted as a true hack - therefore this movie is in the running for best "bad" movie of any year.

A gorgeous movie by David Lowery. What is not said is just as important as what is said. The visuals speak for themselves which is a nice treat. Watch this movie to prepare for his upcoming movie A Ghost Story also starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara.

There are no hot cops, Hollywood endings or explosions so most people won't like this movie.
The acting is what this movie is about. Casey Affleck is great.

Nothing special here. Watchable but there is no reason to….

Soppingly romantic: the 'bad guys' also fall in love in ordinary ways.

Very intense, involving movie. The cinematography is excellent, the directing is slow and deliberate and very affecting. The writer/director does not tell everything that is going on in the story, leaving the audience to figure out some plot points and relationships, which only heightens the suspense. Highly recommended if you like noir-type stories and especially if you like the writer/director Terrence Malick, who this director is obviously imitating.

How can you mess up a simple story so badly? Characters show up with no explanation and no motivation, and the action stops in its tracks while the film wallows in sentiment. A short course in film noir -- whether the director understands it or not, this is a film about men's need for love and how women exploit them for material gain -- would have shown him how it's done. . . . However, Affleck is very good, and it's a credit to Mara, Foster and Carradine that they come across as individuals at all, their roles are so underwritten. I just wish that were enough to recommend this movie, but it's not.

Good cast, good acting, good photography, good music, and good dialog. The story itself though didn't measure up. It wasn't an especially long movie, but it seemed long. Don't know what the meaning of the title is...maybe I missed it.

There is a second DVD included with a movie called "St. Nick" by the same film maker. Like the main movie of this set there it has great photography and sound, but "St. Nick" lacks even more for a story...and an explanation of it's title. I would give "St. Nick" a one star rating at the most.
