Unfortunately I did my background reading AFTER having seen the film.
I would have benefited by skimming through my Roman historys beforhand !

It turns out that the story is substantially true, and it illuminates the events and influences surrounding Constantine's famous Edict to stop persucuting the Christians.

A 'must -see' for fellow history buffs (but with an occasional grain of salt).

This epic and moving film deals primarily with the plight of Katherine of Alexandria....an unworldly beautiful woman blessed with unsurpassed intelligence and purity and holy wisdom.

Abducted by Egyptian cohorts of the declining Roman Empire, Katherine is educated but never indoctrinated into the corrupt Roman system of world domination. Her devotion to a singular God puts her at odds with the pagan beliefs of the Romans, and her writings reach Brittainia and other lands reeling from oppressive Roman rule.

The screenplay, the score, the acting are sublime. This may be the best movie that you never heard of.
