Interesting story. It is a religious fantasy. Not what I was expecting.

Very disappointed to discover that this one involves the supernatural. (reading the back cover blurb would have warned me, I'll admit.)

Disappointing. I found the character Gill to be uninteresting and it was distracting not knowing how to pronounce his name. I'm half way through and keep hoping to find the brilliance of the writer who created the Bernie Gunther series. Probably won't bother to finish this book.

The first half of this book had me hooked and I was reading with great enthusiasm. I connected early with the characters and found the story moved quickly. After reaching the half-way point in the novel, however, I found the story unravelled into badly written nonsense. By then I had already invested so much of my time that I felt obligated to finish it. I don't want to spoil the book for others so I can't comment too much about the ending but suffice to say I found it boring, silly, and a waste of time. My rating for the first half of the book is 4 stars and the last half under 1 star so I compromised and gave it 2.5 stars overall. Hopefully Philip Kerr will go back to writing about Bernie Gunther.
