"Purple Rain is a song, an album, and a film--each one a commercial success and cultural milestone. How did this semi-autobiographical musical masterpiece that blurred R & B, pop, dance, and rock sounds come to alter the recording landscape and become an enduring touchstone for successive generations of fans? Purple Rain is widely considered to be among the most important albums in music history and often named the best soundtrack of all time. Coinciding with the thirtieth anniversary year of Purple Rain's release, Light takes a timely look at the making and incredible popularizing of this once seemingly impossible project."--

"Maybe I'm just like my father too bold."
If you weren't alive in the 80s, you can't understand how omnipresent Prince was. Peak Prince was 1984 when he released the album "Purple Rain" and the film of the same name. You can debate what his best album was (I'm partial to "Sign O' the Times"), but "Purple Rain" is his definitive album, the one that even people who don't care much about Prince know and love. Music journalist Alan Light focuses on the making of the album and the film and the superstardom that both launched Prince into, with mixed results. Light writes as both a critic and a fan, and it's a valuable book for anyone interested in Prince, which should be anyone who cares about music. There will never be another Prince.

3.5 stars. One of my favourite albums growing up was Purple Rain. So when Prince unexpectedly died, I was pretty upset. I decided to read this book when I saw another fan post about it on Litsy. It was really quite interesting. I learned lots of stuff that I didn't know and I enjoyed the trip down Memory Lane. That said, Prince was notoriously private and because of this, the book had no pictures and only archival interviews. Recommended for any fans of this talented musician.

We defy you not to get That Song stuck in your head while reading this bestselling history of the making of both the film and the album called Purple Rain. Released just in time to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the movie's release, Let's Go Crazy is part oral history from the musicians, filmmakers, and others involved in Purple Rain; part biography of Prince himself, though the artist was not directly involved in this project; and part analysis of the changing cultural era.
