The star of The Incredible Dr. Pol shares amusing and often poignant tales from his four decades as a vet in rural Michigan.Born and raised on a Netherlands dairy farm, Dr. Jan Pol has been treating animals in rural Michigan since the 1970s. His more than 20,000 patients have included white mice, 2600-pound horses, and everything in between ? and he has amassed a wealth of stories while caring for this menagerie. Reminiscent of the James Herriot classics, this is a charming, fascinating, and funny memoir that will delight animal lovers everywhere.

I really enjoyed this book. Pol is a down-to-earth, compassionate vet. He considers both the owners and the patients as he treats animals. As he increases in experience, he learns more and more about the animals they treat and how they respond to him. While he emphasizes that animals are not people and people should not treat them as people, he very much respects animals and treats them with compassion and understanding when possible.

Much of the book is about his experiences in the rural Mid-west with farmers, and animals large and small. I think he spends more time on this than James Harriott does in his books. Also, his experiences take place almost a half century later than Harriott's.

I'm now going to try to find his TV show online and on National Geographic World.

Such a good book! I love this book and I was very satisfied at the end! It is funny, informative, and shows true compassion from a vet! Definitely would read again! ( I actually am reading it for the second time :) )

Wonderful book. Reminded me of "All Creatures Great and Small", but, of course, different vets and different eras.

I didn't like this book and stopped reading about 75 pages in. I was hoping for something similar to the James Herriot books but this is nothing like that. The vet didn't seem all that compassionate and there wasn't the type of humour that appeals to me.

One of the best non-fiction books I've read in ages. Very informative and I felt I came away having a new found respect for the "large animal" vets.

If your an animal lover, this is a definite "must read".
