A haunting Civil War tale about two sisters who disguise themselves as men and join the Confederate army. Gritty and gripping with vivid descriptions of battle and the daily life of soldiers. Nothing sugar coated here.

Novels that do not glorify war as winners and losers but show human growth despite it have appeal. Two females fighting in an army disguised as males is something that did happen in real life. This book is very well written in a literary fashion. I especially like the use of lists, i.e., p 121, gangrene, pneumonia, strange fevers, nightmares.
