"Jess Dunne is third-generation Hollywood, but her star on the boulevard has yet to materialize. Sure, she's got a Santa Monica address and a working actress roommate, but with her nowhere barista job in a town that acknowledges zeroes only as a dress size, she's a dead girl walking. Enter Jess's mother--a failed actress who puts the strange in estrangement. She dives headlong into her daughter's downward spiral, forcing Jess to muster all her spite and self-preservation to snag a career upgrade: as a personal assistant for a famous (and secretly agoraphobic) film composer, Jess's workdays are now filled with shopping for luxury goods and cooking in his perfectly designed kitchen"--Jacket.

Think the people in your life are demanding? It won't seem so bad after you read this book's description of working as a personal assistant to celebrities in Los Angeles. It's stressful, awesome, ridiculous, funny, and even a little sad.

This may sound like a beach book..or a PEOPLE mag-like novella..but it's not.
The characters may live in L.A.
but their real-life counterparts exist across the universe.
Who doesn't know a Donna or Eva and their sickening grasp for power; their abuse of those younger or weaker; wielding that power with a firm amoral grip.
This young writer tells a morality tale, and while it may be wrapped in Hollywood tissue, it is an excellent read...unlikable characters and all.

A readable yet flawed book with a specific sense of place: Hollywood, Malibu, Santa Monica. The broken mother-daughter relationship that I expected to hold the centre of the story didn't do that for me (it's more about friendship) & some interesting characters get used up along the way, without reappearing in a meaningful way (I missed them!). Uneven, entertaining, with a very high ick factor.

Compulsively readable in a Kardashian sort of way. #guilty pleasures!
