A two hour documentary that asks: What do we lose when a language dies? What does it take to save a language? It is filmed around the world: on a remote island off the coast of Australia, where 400 Aboriginal people speak ten different languages, all at risk; in Wales, where Welsh, once in danger, is today making a comeback; and in Hawaii, where a group of Hawaiian activists are fighting to save their native tongue.

Accessible little gem for people who like different cultures and histories and understand the importance of how one's home reflects in the language. The narrator profiles three different cultures (Australian aboriginals, the Welsh, and the Hawaiians) as their people work to keep their languages alive. Each story has it own nuances and approaches; for example, you learn that the flooding of a Welsh town to provide water for Liverpool was the catalyst in the 1960s for angry, massive demonstrations that led to Welsh becoming the nation's primary language taught in school, along with English, and an unswerving dedication to the national poetry and music festival: Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru. Welsh hip-hop rappers, run-of-the-mill polyglots in Australia, and children singing sweetly in Hawaiian make this DVD engaging even when the odds seem stacked (native Hawaiian speakers, for example, are less than 5% of the population).
