Learn about outrageous, politically-perilous, funky, disgusting, regrettable, and life-threatening creations people have worn throughout the course of human history, all the way up to the present day. From spats and togas to hoop skirts and hair shirts, why people wore what they did is an illuminating way to look at the social, economic, political, and moral climates throughout history.

The reviews above and other comments are excellent. I would add that there are great illustrations in color on every page and the design of the book is excellent and what else would you expect from NATIONAL GEOGRAPIC ?

I really liked this book. It is brief but you get the picture quickly of why it was fashionable to wear certain items in the time period. I just couldn't imagine wearing half the things. If you are interested in fashion and a bit of history, this book is for you. It will wow you and make you cringe.

This book would be appropriate for fashion lovers or just those looking to add depth to the history that we all know and love. Every part of culture speaks to the moment.
