In the run-and-gun days of the mid-1990s, young Billy Graves worked a South Bronx aggressive anti-crime unit known as the Wild Geese. After he accidentally shot a ten-year-old boy while struggling with an angel-dusted berserker, Billy spent years on dead-end postings. Now he's in his early forties, content to do his job as a sergeant on the Manhattan Night Watch. Until a call comes that puts the bad old days back in Billy's life with a vengeance.

Somewhat confusingly this is novelist Richard Price ("Clockers," "Lush Life") writing as Harry Brandt. I'm not sure the point of having a pen name if you tell everyone who have a pen name. Anyway, this is a tough, gritty cop thriller that builds tension well, but has some trouble with its conclusion.

Thought the characterizations were pretty good, however the prose was only average. Reasonably well plotted and worth reading if you are interested.

I was very disappointed, book failed to capture my imagination. "Whites" fell flat because: (1) Richard Price's sensibilities are stuck in the 90's; (2) story and characters are incomplete and vague; and (3) I couldn't tell if the book was a police procedural or an updated version of "Lush Life"

An interesting plot with a satisfying end, and it shows the human moral struggle in the grey area between right and wrong, and how far loyalty should go. Lots of New York and police jargon, which I guess was an important aspect of telling the story, but for me it required more concentration than I was willing to give it on a hot summer night.

Too much "street language" and too many confusing characters. Did not finish.

Price is a master and he's at the top of his game in The Whites. The characters are so distinctive and well drawn that reading the novel is like living and working with them. Several intersecting stories, as well, so readers are advised to dedicate some free time and immerse themselves in this book.

This is the crime novel to read. Strong drama, great characters. Rates right up there with his masterpiece,"Clockers". One of America's great crime novelist, better than James Ellroy, who I really like. Read it, won't be disappointed.

Excellent police procedural with lots of dark humor reminiscent of early Joseph Wambaugh LAPD novels. This involves the NYPD. Well written, good story, highly recommended.
